Sandra Bland's Family Reach $1.9M Settlement In Civil Lawsuit Over Her Death

The family of Sandra Bland, the Texas woman who died in jail after being arrested during a routine traffic stop last summer, have agreed to settle their wrongful death lawsuit for $1.9million.

Attorney Cannon Lambert confirmed the settlement with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Waller County Jail to the station KTRK.

Bland, who was an activist with the Black Lives Matter movement, was pulled over by a Texas state trooper on July 10, 2015, for a minor traffic infraction and taken to the Waller County Jail in Hempstead.

Three days later, the 28-year-old woman was found hanging from a jail cell partition with a plastic garbage bag tied around her neck. Her death was ruled a suicide by asphyxiation.

At the time of her death, Bland was in the process of moving from the Chicago area to Texas to pursue a job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University.
