Ciro Immobile struck twice in the last 15 minutes to rescue a 3-2 victory for Italy in a surprisingly close-fought game against Macedonia on Sunday.
The Azzurri had been expected to ease past the Balkan hosts, who finished bottom of their groups in Euro 2016 and World Cup 2014 qualification.
Two quick-fire, second-half strikes from Ilija Nestorovski and Ferhan Hasani cancelled out Andrea Belotti’s opener, leaving Macedonia on the verge of a historic win.
However, Immobile left it late to score a pair of goals to put Italy on seven points after three games in Group G alongside Spain.
